Researching film certificates-

Our chosen genre is horror/thriller so i will research into other films that feature conventions of horror's that have different age certificates and are aimed at different audiences using the BBFC website.

U films are aimed at four years and older, the U stands for Universal, so the films that are given the certificate U have to be appropriate for the audience, and therefore have to be FUN.

Monsters, Inc.Films that are U's examples:

  • A Monster in Paris
  • Hotel Transylvania
  • Monsters Inc- This genre is an animated film for families and children to watch and enjoy, although it uses 'monsters' as the main features in the film, and therefore uses conventions from a horror film.

PG films are for children and adults, as PG stands for parental guidance, these films are for ages 8 and above, however these films could upset younger or more sensitive children, as these films have MILD THREAT in them.

PG films examples are:
    Monster House
  • Scooby Doo 1 & 2
  • The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch & the Wardrobe
  • The Bridge To Terabithia
  • Coraline
  • Harry Potter & the Prisoner of askaban
  • Monsters Vs. Aliens
  • Monster House- This film's genre is animated family friendly, and sci-fi/fantasy, this film uses the convention of a haunted house and the use of monsters which could easily scare young children.

12/12A films mean that only children aged 12 and above can go see them unaccompanied, but 12A means that they need to be accompanied by an adult, but the 12 certificate is just for videos/DVDs/Blu-rays and 12A is for films at the cinema only. These films will contain some PERIL and can give you a FRIGHT.

12/12A films include:
Dark Shadows (2012) Poster
  • Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows part 2
  • The Woman in Black
  • Twilight Saga- Breaking Dawn part 2
  • Ghostbusters
  • The Others
  • Dark Shadows- This is classed as fantasy and comedy, this has been given this certificate as it features comic horror violence and sexual content, some drug use, language and smoking. Therefore this film wouldn't be appropriate for children under the age of 12.

15 films are for 15 years and older as these films can feature strong threats and can be not for weak the hearted. These type of films are more of the PARANORMAL and a bit GORY.

Orphan15 film examples:
  • Sinister
  • Cabin in the Woods
  • Let Me In
  • Paranormal Activity's
  • Insidious
  • House At The End Of The Street
  • Orphan- This film has been given the genre horror and thriller as it contains scary scenes, strong sex, language, bloody violence and also includes moments of dark humour, therefore making it a 15. So, it is only appropiate for over 15 years old, as the guidelines have been made for a 15 film. However, Orphan on Blu-ray is an 18, this is because it contains deleted scenes that have been cut out of the DVD version, as they are more graphic and un-appropriate for a 15 film.

18 films are specifically only 18 years and over as these films tend to be more, graphic, scary, features more strong language, violence and contains lots of GORE that is inappropriate for children and is aimed only for adults to view.

Scream18 films include:

  • The Human Centipede
  • The Last House On The Left
  • Scary Movie
  • Audition
  • Halloween
  • The Last Exorcism
  • Texas Chainsaw Massacre
  • Hostel
  • Scream- This is a horror because of the conventions that are used, including violence and blood and gore. This film also includes, frequent strong language, sexual activity and strong horror, meaning it isn't for people younger than 18 as they are for adults only. It also includes comedy and can be classed as a thriller. This film relates to our own film as we will also be using a mask to cover the killer's identity and will kill teenagers just like 'Ghostface' does in Scream.
